The Right way to use a Neti Pot
An ancient yogi aid used for centuries in Indian meditation traditions, the neti pot has become extremely popular in the United States in recent times. A neti pot is essentially a tiny ceramic pot used to flush the passageways between the ears, nose and throat with salt water, removing built up congestion.
Neti pots are used by many people to clear their sinuses, flush out mucus and fight off the risk of infections in their nasal passages.
Here are some facts you should be aware of before using the neti pot:
Usage
Research shows that regular clearing of the sinuses removes bacteria and other environmental contaminants that cause infections, congestion, and increased pressure in the face and head. Although nasal sprays are available to clear out these passages, neti pots are a healthier, more effective alternative since it uses warm salt water to flush out the nasal passages.
To create the warm water solution for use in a neti pot simply dissolve 1 tablespoon of salt into half a liter of lukewarm water. Now tilt your head over a bathtub or bathroom sink and pour the mixture down each nostril. As the liquid enters your nostril it will either make its way through the other nostril or down your throat, clearing them up right away. Repeat this procedure two to four times a week for best results.
Care should be taken when using neti pots, however, as incorrect use can be risky. The most common problem associated with neti pots is not using it properly. First time neti pot users are naturally afraid of allowing salt water run down their nose and into their throat. This can be overcome with a little practice. Focus on opening your sinus channels as your flush it with the neti pot and you will quickly get used to the sensation.
Salinity
Getting the salt levels in the neti mixture just right is crucial to how your body will react to regular use of the neti pot. Neti mixtures that are too salty can result in anything from a sharp stinging sensation in the sinus to nose bleeds. Very low salinity levels in the neti mixture will have no effect on your sinuses, leaving it open to get infected with bacteria.
Water temperature
Like the salt levels, water temperature in a neti mixture has to be just right for it to be effective. The water should be lukewarm - not too hot and not too cold. The best way of preparing the water is to boil it, add the salt and then let the water cool as the salt dissolves. Hot water will cause a burning feeling in your sinuses, while steaming hot water can burn your sinuses - an unpleasant sensation to say the least. Cold water may not dissolve the salt completely, leading to the risk of salt concentrations being deposited directly into your sinuses. Not only are these salt deposits extremely uncomfortable, they can be difficult to remove and can even destroy your nose, throat and ear's natural antibodies.
Make sure you heat the water properly, allow the salt to fully dissolve and allow the mixture to cool to just above room temperature to avoid any problems.
Neti Pot Style
While the majority of neti pots sold are ceramic, there are some plastic pots. Don't feel awkward to try out a neti pot in the store - a pot with a neck or handle that is too large or too small for your nose cavity is completely useless once you've paid for it and brought it home.
A word of Caution
Our sinuses are very sensitive, and prone to infections. While neti pots have been used for hundreds of years for hygiene and self care, it is up to the user to educate him or herself on its proper and safe use. If you have any questions about the long term health effects of using neti pots for clearing your sinuses don't hesitate to consult your doctor.
